The Dark Hedges are several 300-year-old Beech trees reaching up and across each other, becoming heavily intertwined to create this spectacular avenue. Local folklore has it that the "Grey Lady" appears amongst the trees at dusk. The avenue leads to Gracehill Mansion, home of the Stuart Family. It is locaed off the Bregagh Road, 3 miles from the village of Stranocum in Co. Antrim.

I live about 15 minutes drive from this beautiful site and never knew it existed until I saw a picture of it in the National Geographic's Travel magazine! The shame! I then spent a bit of time trying to find out exactly where it was...some places say Armoy, others say Stranocum. Either way, finding the one part of a single road with these trees could be difficult enough! So here are some better directions: If you are travelling on the A44 towards Armoy, on the south (Ballymena) side of Armoy you will see a signpost for 'Gracehill Golf Club'. This is the Bregagh Road. The Black Hedges were planted to create a stunning avenue into the Gracehill Manor House and it certainly has achieved its goal.
ReplyDeleteIt's on the way from the Giant's Causeway back to Belfast, it's not even a detour! (It's more beautiful when you go south to Belfast, not going north!). Look, it's a road with trees on the side, you're probably asking what could be that awesome. Well, it looks like a portal to an other world, a fantastic world... It's gorgeous! It was pooring rain when we got there and it was beautiful anyway, oh and it's absolutely free! It's pretty easy to find, but here is the coordinates anyway:+55° 8' 11.40", -6° 23' 3.51
ReplyDeleteWorth a Visit, Like something from middle Earth and a noticeable piece of scenery from game of thrones which ii filmed around this area, best of all it's natural and free.
